SOMERVILLE — On Thursday, May 25th, 2023, Dellbrook|JKS celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for phase one of POAH Communities’ Clarendon Hill redevelopment, a 9-story high-rise, titled “Building E”.

Three Clarendon Hill buildings, originally built in 1948, were demolished to make way for the new development. Building E not only offers safe, modern apartments to all residents of the site’s previous structures, but also creates more affordable housing for the city of Somerville. This reimagined complex, which holds 168 residential units, shared community areas, and recreation facilities, will be brought to life in pieces, using modular building technology.

With modules meticulously crafted off-site, the cutting-edge construction technique adopted at Clarendon Hills ensures enhanced precision, accelerated timelines, and exceptional quality control. By leveraging the benefits of this innovative method, the project maximizes cost and energy savings to maintain Clarendon Hill’s affordability for the non-profit client, and in turn, its residents. In addition to the sustainable advantages associated with its construction technique, Building E will also achieve LEED Platinum certification.

“The project presents a unique opportunity to introduce large-scale modular construction to the area,” said Jonathan Bonaccorsi, Senior Project Manager at Dellbrook|JKS. “We believe this project has the potential to change how our local industry approaches future work.”

The new Clarendon Hills, designed by ICON Architecture, and supported by project partners including Redgate, the Somerville Community Corporation, and the Somerville Housing Authority, currently has an anticipated completion date of September 2024.
