Dellbrook|JKS Breaks Ground on Blessed Sacrament

JAMAICA PLAIN — On April 30th, Dellbrook|JKS officially broke ground on the redevelopment of Pennrose Companies’ Blessed Sacrament in Jamaica Plain. Alongside the Hyde Square Task Force (HSTF), DiMella Shaffer architects, Mayor Wu, community leaders, and project partners, the team celebrated the conversion of the 1913 historic church into a vibrant and affordable, mixed-income facility.

Located on Centre Street, this new community will feature 55 residential units, including studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments. Demolition to the rear portion of the former church has occurred, making way for a new five-story, steel-framed addition. The project includes a multi-purpose community and performance center, dedicated to youth arts and cultural programs.

The revitalized 71,000 SF development will anchor the Latin Quarter and help spark continued investment on Centre Street. Funded through Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) equity, residents will enjoy access to a more affordable community. Units are available to households at 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Out of the 55 total units, six will be designated for individuals experiencing homelessness.

“We’re thrilled to have partnered with Pennrose and DiMella Shaffer once again,” said Mike Kizelewicz, Project Executive at Dellbrook|JKS. “The adaptive reuse of the existing church is an exciting away to honor the history of the building while also addressing the need for affordable housing in a sustainable way and we’re already making great progress.”

This adaptive transformation will provide extended opportunities to families in need while addressing today’s housing needs. While maintaining the church’s history, the new structure will give new purpose to a historic space.

Exterior restoration has begun, and foundation pile driving for structural support is currently underway. The project is anticipated to be completed by the Fall of 2027.
