Tufts University
Halligan Hall
The Halligan Hall project was approximately 41,809 SF, located at 161 College Avenue in Medford, Massachusetts. The building consists of a two-story, T-shaped structure, part of the engineering school, constructed circa 1920. The building was connected to the athletics complex to the north. The latest renovation, completed in 2009, only addressed envelope and HVAC improvements at the front section of the building. The scope of work involved preconstruction services such as estimating, schedule management, and assisting with pre-purchasing long-lead equipment. The construction services delivered a fully renovated Halligan Hall, including but not limited to envelope repairs, window replacement, and mechanical improvements to provide new, state-of-the-art, energy-efficient infrastructure systems to advance Tufts' decarbonization goals and programmatic layout changes. The mix of classrooms, labs, and office space did not dramatically change, but options for optimizing space efficiency and logical adjacencies were anticipated.
It was intended to expand laboratory space in the building to support ECE research. The starting premise for research was a shared lab configuration, with core support labs for shared uses and equipment. ECE utilized research spaces with a range of functions in the building, including wet and dry laboratories, core labs possibly including 3D printing, welding and fabrication, lasers, multimedia, and biosafety level one (BSL1), as well as class labs.
