Storer Building

The Storer Lab Building on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy campus is a vintage 1969 engineering building and needed a complete renovation and additional laboratory space. The existing building was plagued with deficiencies in the electrical systems as well as significant layout and design problems. The resultant project included a 25,000 SF additional and renovations to both the interior and exterior of the existing 26,000 SF building. The approximate construction value of the project was $9,700,000. The Storer Engineering Lab project was constructed in two phases to accommodate the school’s trimester schedule. The first upgraded heavy equipment laboratories and faculty offices; the second added much-needed modern classrooms and support facilities for all the engineering disciplines. The new addition compliments the existing building through the use of similar materials and colors. The building, however, breaks from being another utilitarian campus structure by including expanses of a glass curtain wall that provides stunning views of Buzzards Bay and the Cape Cod Canal only yards away. The three-story public atrium, between the old and the new structures, has taken on a larger role to serve the cadets as it has become a major connection path linking residence and dining halls with the other major academic buildings.
