CAMBRIDGE— On October 20th, Dellbrook|JKS broke ground on Just A Start’s Rindge Commons Economic Mobility Hub, a mixed-use passive house development dedicated to enriching the surrounding community.

The six-story structure, designed by ICON Architecture, will total 72,881 sq. ft. Out of this, 22,000 sq. ft. of space will go towards Just A Start's headquarters and its programs, including Bio & IT Workforce Training, Youthbuild Job Training, Housing Resources, and Financial Coaching. 10,000 sq. ft. will be reserved for preschool classrooms, and 6,000 sq. ft. will be used as commercial space for incoming vendors or office tenants. Additionally, this action-packed facility will hold 24 affordable housing units on the building’s topmost floors.

Located beside Rindge Tower Apartments, the new development will face the streets of Rindge Avenue and the Alewife Brook Parkway. Fitting snugly against the sidewalk, this wood and steel framed building will give the area a more walkable and metropolitan atmosphere. In addition, residents and visitors will enjoy the accessibility of Boston’s train network with only a four-minute walk from Rindge Commons to Alewife station.

To help celebrate the beginning of construction, the groundbreaking ceremony brought together Just A Start program graduates and staff, MA Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy, Mayor of Cambridge Sumbul Siddiqui, the MA Department of Housing and Community Development, and a large group of supportive community members. The Dellbrook|JKS Rindge Commons project team and President & CEO Mike Fish were also in attendance.
